VOODOO MAGIC FACETING POLISH -
Polish like magic with Voodoo!
Voodoo Magic Polish is a special diamond-carrying compound for gem faceting that was developed for
use on composite (non-metallic) laps such as Corian, the Wizard Lap, Phenolic, Acrylic, etc.
Testing was done on Corian, but any similar material should work well, as the polish creates
a thin film between the lap surface and the gem.
I developed and tested Voodoo on Corian laps. And, at present, I recommend the following laps (in order of preference):
-
Dick Walker's "Wizard Lap" - sold by John Franke at The Facet Shoppe.
They're about $25.00, and they produce the nicest, most scratch-free finish of all the laps I've tested with Voodoo Polish -
especially good for Quartzes.
-
Corian laps manufactured and sold by Bruce White at Sierra Gems.
They're about $24.95, plus shipping, and are nicely machined very flat and true, with chamfered holes and edges.
-
Corian, Himacs, and Formica laps manufactured and sold by Roy Wikman.
Last quoted price was $25.00, and that included shipping. I prefer the harder Formica and Himacs materials, but they all work nicely,
and Roy is absolute aces for shipping service.
Voodoo Magic Polish is NOT a re-packaging of industrial abrasive, a dental-industry product,
or someone else's juju. Voodoo Magic Polish was developed by professional Gemstone Artist John
Bailey specifically for polishing facets on colored stones between hardness of 3 and 8+. It is the fastest,
easiest, most trouble-free polishing system that I've seen, and it literally doubled
my finishing speed, while reducing polishing frustrations to near zero. I developed it for myself, but decided
to offer it to other cutters.
Voodoo Magic Carving Polish is now available in limited quantities. This polish is a completely different formula
from the Faceting Polish. It is designed specifically for maximum stickiness to stay on your bristle-brushes
for polishing hand-carved contours in all gem materials. It is recommended that this polish be used at slower to
medium speeds to keep heat to a minimum. Like most similar compounds, it will thin with higher temperatures.
To order CARVING Polish, simply specify this in the "notes" section of the order form below.
I am continuing to adjust the compounding for Voodoo to improve performance - especially for softer and problematic
stones. The latest compounding update is 07/27/2008, and all lots mixed will now be dated.
Why Voodoo Magic Polish is special:
-
INCREDIBLY FAST prepolish: The 9µm or 2,000 cuts as fast as a 600 (red) Newbond, but leaves a finish as slick
as found on many "native-cut" stones. This finish requires very little additional polishing with
the 50,000 to complete a competition-grade polish. This prepolish also won't under-cut on finnicky
materials like Corundum, Spinel, or YAG.
-
VERY FAST and fine prepolish: the 6µm or 3,000 cuts about half as fast as the 2,000 but leaves
a finish good enough for girdle polishes and requires so little touching with the 50,000 to achieve
competition-grade polish that you can cut the meets "on" and the final won't visibly move them.
-
VERY FAST and easy to adjust meets – The 14,000 polish leaves a 14,000 finish, but cuts almost
as fast as a blue Newbond lap on many stones.
-
SUPER FINE, still fast and can move meets around - The 50,000 Voodoo polish leaves a competition-grade
finish, and can still be used directly after 600-mesh cutting on smaller stones. Can still drift meets in easily.
-
Tested at lap speeds from 50 rpm to 600+ rpm - leaves a smooth
finish at high-speed without excessive streaking or scratching. Any small streaks can be removed with
just one or two revolutions at slow-speed.
-
Very high diamond-density, with nearly 20% diamond by weight so it cuts aggressively and lasts
a long time.
-
Self-lubricating, so no "extender" required. No mess, no fuss maintaining the perfect moisture level, etc.
Store the lap for a week and come back to polishing without any fuss or prep-time.
-
Produces very flat faces, even on softer stones.
-
Voodoo works magic on troublesome stones and situations, such as
Sphalerite,
Strontium Ttinate,
Spodumene, or
on-cleavage Topaz.
-
Refresh the charge without stopping the lap and without significant interruption of polish work.
-
Proven on stones from 3.5 to 8+ hardness.
So far, Sapphire is the only stone for which I prefer a different lap/polish combination
(the BA5T by Gearloose is my choice for Sapphire).

Voodoo Reviews:
Carl H. Wrote (8/1/08 new formula):
"Received the Voodoo yesterday. Tried it today on Moonstone. Loaded a Last Lap with 50,000 on the inside
and 3,000 on the outside. Results were very good. I liked the way the 3000 drifted in the meets without
overshooting. Three swipes on the 50,000 and a better shine came up than I ever got with cerium oxide.
The edges were sharp and no rounding ... if this is an indication of things to come, I have found me a new polish system."
Terrell wrote:
"The polish cuts such a fine edge that you have to really have your act together
to make the meets correctly ... it was awesome. Fast, clean, and beautiful. I love the stuff."
Mike from the U.K. wrote:
"Congratulations on an excellent product ... just finished the pavilion of this years UKFCG open
competition stone in orange coloured cubic zirconia using 50k Voodoo Polish ... I find it to be
excellent, a flawless finish, no visible pitting or scratches under a 10 power loupe, and very
aggressive on higher lap speeds for pulling meets in ... no problems throughout the full speed
range of my Graves MKIV machine. What I particularly like about it is the total lack of mess
... a quick wipe with a tissue and the facet is ready for viewing."
Chris recently wrote:
"Yesterday I tried your 50M VooDoo Potion on my ceramic lap. When I first put it on,
little hairline scratches appeared instantly. I fiddled with it for about five minutes,
then wiped the surface of the lap lightly, turned the speed up to dry it, then tried it
again with no additional lubricants of any kind. The results were amazing. In no time
the alexandrite ... had a bright, clean polish."
"Thanks again John. It's a great product."
NOTE: Voodoo was designed for Composite laps, but one can't argue with success! Experimenting
is really a part of lapidary work - and certainly an enjoyable part of it!
Jerry in Oregon says:
"So far I've used it on tourmaline, sunstone and topaz. I'm about to try it on YAG.
I've pretty much decided that this is so easy to use and works so well that I'm done with
oxide polishes."
Chris in Washington says:
"You've got a winner John. What a fantastic product. I have been reasonably satisfied with a number of
different products, but never like this. Now I can't wait to cut some other materials and see what it
will do on them."
"My pavillian concave facets cut in beautifully with just the 14M VooDoo potion directly on the 13mm mandrel...
it was not necessary to cut the concaves in with a 1200 diamond mandrel.
Which equates to another time saver from your VooDoo potion. "
"If you ever want a referral on the VooDoo potion, use my name."
Jake in Florida says:
"I received the Voodoo Magic Polish today in the mail, and right away I charged the lighter corian lap.
In a matter of minutes, I finished polishing a pavilion... This sure is a magic polish!"
"I have tried many polishing agents including ultralaps, copper laps, tin laps, regular 50k diamond compound, alumina oxide ... and nothing, I mean nothing, has ever done as
well of a job as your Voodoo Magic Polish has done for me! I would/will recommend this polish to every
faceter I know ... this is truly amazing stuff!"
